Theoretical Approach

The three greatest influences on my theoretical approach to psychotherapy are Relational Psychodynamic Theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Harm Reduction.  Relational Psychodynamic Theory offers a foundation for how I understand our minds, especially around how our mind impacts how we engage with ourselves and others.  ACT and Harm Reduction have helped me build upon that foundation with philosophies and strategies that have had significant influence on how I approach my role as a therapist, as well as the strategies that lead to significant change. Please click the tabs below to learn more specifics of each approach.

Relational Dynamic

Relational Psychodynamic Theory: As a Relation Theorist I have an interest in both the internal workings of the mind and how we engage in interpersonal experiences. I understand the mind as being significantly shaped by the internalization of interpersonal experience, especially those from our earlier years. Much of the processes of the mind exist outside of our awareness, which can still significantly impact how we engage with ourselves and others. A major part of therapy becomes developing awareness of these unconscious processes. With that knowledge now in our awareness we can make different choices in the present, that better serve the needs of our internal and external worlds.

ACT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT focuses on changing how we engage with our thoughts and feelings, with the purpose of living more in tune with how we want to live our life. ACT utilizes acceptance and mindfulness based approaches to help us to break unhelpful patterns and promote more intentional, value-driven responses. This, together with value-based behavior change, helps promote a more flexible way of living. ACT promotes psychological flexibility not only as a goal of treatment, but also as a way to live a full, meaning-filled life. When we are psychologically flexible, we can hold our thoughts more lightly, make space for emotions and sensations without being driven by them, and move towards what matters.

Harm Reduction

Harm Reduction: Harm Reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with certain actions, which usually have a significant stigma around them. It aims to remove the judgment around these actions and focus on the harm that is caused by these actions, harm both to the individual and to those around them. This philosophy recognizes that many actions that do lead to significant harm, often also provide benefits to the individual. And through Harm Reduction strategies we attempt to reduce the harm of these actions, while preserving and potentially even increasing the benefits of those actions.

Policies of My Practice

Fees:
My current fees per individual session are $200. Please do reach out to me if you cannot afford these fees as I may be able to offer you a fee reduction. This would take your income and expenses into account to help us figure out a fee that would work for us both.

Insurance:

I do not currently accept insurance directly in my practice. For your insurance carrier, I may be an "out of network" provider for you. This means I would  provide you with monthly documentation to submit to your health insurance company or employee benefits plan for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits.  It is helpful to call your insurance provider in advance to determine your level of coverage.

Please first check with your policy provider by asking the following questions:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits to see a licensed psychologist?

  • If so, what percentage of sessions do you cover?

  • What is the coverage or reimbursement amount per session?

  • Is there a session limit, and if so, in what time period?

  • Is there an out-of-network deductible?

  • If so, what is it and how much of the deductible have I met so far?

  • How do I access the necessary forms to submit for reimbursement?

Cancellation Policy:

Generally, I require at least 24-hours' notice if you wish to cancel your appointment or you will be charged the full cost of the missed session.

Good Faith Estimate:

I am able to offer good faith estimates in accordance with the No Surprises Act.
